CHAPTER FOURTEEN

That week, things on Riot seemed to go back to normal. Or as close to normal as things ever really got for Bravo Team. On Monday, Briggs came out of the small room at the back of Home to post their scheduled work orders around Bravo Sector like he did every week. That day, he was still wearing his sunglasses.

“Whoa, Sarge.” Wilson snorted. “Go a little too hard last night too?”

Briggs turned away from the wall where he’d tacked the new sheet of paper. It was impossible to tell if he’d even looked at any of his operators before he headed back toward the short hall. “Make sure it all gets done. I’m working on a few things in my office, which means I’m not here.”

He didn’t give anyone a chance to say anything else before he disappeared down the short hall and closed the door to his office behind him.

Idina and her team waited a moment longer. Then Bam clicked his tongue. “Good work, dude.”

“What? I didn’t do anything.”

“Sergeant Briggs is in almost as good a mood as I am,” Trigger added, grinning from ear to ear.

Wilson leaned away from her, scowling at her abnormal reaction, and shook his head. “He’s wearing his sunglasses inside.”

“What do you expect him to do, man?” Chandler snickered. “Sit and give you a fucking play-by-play?”

“Whatever.”

They didn’t see Briggs for the rest of the day, and when their work was finished and it was time to go home, Edgars volunteered to head into the back and at least tell their team leader that they were heading out.

He knocked on the door and got a terse, one-word reply.

“What?”

“Got anything else for us before we call it, Sergeant?”

“Nope. Have a good night.”

Frowning, Edgars backed away from the door. Briggs didn’t have anything else to say, and Bravo was now off-duty anyway.

“Have a good night,” he muttered to the rest of the team putting their things away in their lockers and grabbing jackets and hats. “That’s all he said.”

“Sure.” Wilson rolled his eyes. “He can sleep off a hangover all day at Home, and it’s still considered him doing his job. I try it one time…”

Trigger laughed. “He smoked the shit out of you for it.”

The rest of the team pitched in with jokes about Wilson as they stepped outside into the brisk air and what little light remained in the sky at the end of November. Another day of work at Fort Riot coming to a close.

It didn’t seem all that weird the next morning when Briggs didn’t come out of his office at the usual time. Idina and her team waited around longer than they would have, in case their sergeant still intended to come out and be part of their team this morning. He didn’t.

“Anybody see him this morning?” Grossman asked.

“Nope.”

“He’s always here first anyway. Most of the time.”

Chandler sighed and headed toward the hallway. “I’m gonna go check.”

“Dude, if he’s in there, he’s probably not in a great mood,” Edgars warned.

“We haven’t seen or heard from our team leader.
